In their previous home game in this competition Bayern beat Real Madrid 4-3 to progress through to this stage, winning 6-4 overall on aggregate. Their visitors had a slightly more comfortable time of it in the quarter-finals as they beat Liverpool 4-0 across the two legs to make it to their third consecutive semi-finals in this competition.
